A REAL LIFESAVER

9/7 - Grandpa Steve and Uncle Rob left for Logan today in preparation for Lotoja & to meet up with Uncle Ted & Uncle Jared (all 3 will uncles will be riding tomorrow).

Scot was left behind with a bunch of girls & Ethan, so he opted to go fishing on his own, so Grandma Judie, Aunt Roberta & I took the kids to the park in Teton Village. They had a great time going down the slides and playing in the rocks. Ethan saw a lot of birds on the little pond neighboring the park, and he kept signing "bird" - he's really got this signing stuff down. Ethan and Anna Claire found the life preserver hanging on the fence in by the pond - how cute are they huh? Ethan also managed to find a few other treasures that I was less than excited about...one of which happened to be a used bandaid. Can someone say Purel? Yeah, it's my favorite thing these days. (*The baby is Ethan's cousin, Mariah).

We had a really nice afternoon walk before going to meet up with Scot for dinner at a little mexican place called El Abuelito. It sounded like a good idea to go out this morning - but with Anna Claire and Ethan, who were tired and a little on the cranky side by this point of the evening, it turned out to be a little bit of a disaster. Scot took Ethan on a walk around the restaurant to entertain him while we ordered the food, and then tried to bring him back to me so he could chill for a little while. That wasn't going to happen - so Scot took Ethan outside. Soon, Grandma Judie joined Scot and Ethan with Anna Claire & by the time the food came, Roberta and I were the only ones at the table (with Mariah). We ate our food and then I went out to spell Scot of his parental duties so that he could eat. None of us really ate dinner together. Typically, Ethan is a perfect angel at restaurants, but not this time. Sigh. So much for a night out.

Bedtime for Ethan never looked as good as it did that night. He had the best nights sleep of the entire trip tonight, but at 4 a.m., Scot and I were both awakened by the sound of a bear tearing into the latched trash containers. We were staying on the third floor of the townhouse, but our windows were open & we heard everything. We went down to the second floor and out on the balcony to see if we could get a glimpse of the bear (and the damage)...there was a bunch of garbage spread throughout the townhouse complex, but the bear was too far under our balcony to actually see him. Scot ended up going downstairs to tell Roberta about the bear (Anna Claire was sleeping in the room just inside from where the bear was & we wanted to make sure she was safe). The bear came and went for well over an hour and the next morning we surveyed the damage. He had completely torn 2 of the trash containers off the building & had ripped the lid off the top of ours (pulling the latch, hinges etc. right out of the wood). He had taken a big bag of our trash up the hill a little way, but had left behind all the dirty diapers, not that I can blame him for that. Never a dull moment. The rental management company said that the bears have been coming down in search of food more than usual this year because they didn't have a good berry season in the mountains. Too bad our garbage was mainly full of dirty diapers. Better luck next time. (P.S. This photo is not of our actual garbage digging pal).

That is scary about the bear. They have been a big problem this year around my parent's home in Spanish Fork canyon. My cousin is living up there too and one day while she was in their yard with her 3 little kids, one wandered into their yard between where she was and where her kids were. She yelled at them to go back to the house where they took some photos. A few evenings later her husband turned around while working at the computer to see another bear leaning up against the glass door just behind where he was working. Amazingly he scared it off before any damage was done. Wildlife services found and relocated one bear, but from the photos taken they think that there were two and the other is still in the area. Jeff keeps reminding me that they were there first!
