Our home teachers came over tonight. Bryan, who has taken special note of Ethan's love of tools, typically tries to tell a story out of the Ensign that deals with (or mentions) tools in some way. Tonight was no exception...it was a story about a dad who was a mechanic and was often called upon to serve others who were in a bind with their cars etc. The Dad would take his teenaged son with him, even if it was in the middle of the night, to have his help and also set an example for him. The son resented him for it and wondered why his father was always doing things to help other people even at the expense of spending time with his own family - but some years later, the son was reactivating himself in the church and heard a woman speak about an experience when she was scared and freezing and called the branch pres (or someone) for help and a nice man was sent to help her fix her car...she noted that this man had become her hero. In the story, when the woman mentioned the mans name, the boy realized that she was speaking about his father & he then realized that his father was his hero too. Ethan loved the story (mainly the picture in the magazine with the Dad and son working with tools on the car) and Bryan tried to help Ethan really connect with the meaning, and here was the exchange:
B: Ethan, do you know what a hero is?
E: Yes
B: What is it?
Ethan stands there quietly trying to think of how to answer...Bryan tries to help
B: Is your Dad a hero?
E: No
B: Is your Mom a hero?
E: No
Then Scot tries to help: Is Grandpa a hero?
E: No, Grandpa is a dixnix...and Grandma is a dixnix too.
