HIGHLIGHTERS

The past few days, Brynn has been found with highlighters (and markers - none of them permanent), trying to apply the color to her lips. With her love of all things chapstick, she apparently now believes that anything with a lid may be applied as such. Instead of doing a quick wipe, I need to get a photo next time.

For over a month now, Brynn has also been interested in going potty. She will come up to me whenever she has messy pants now and grab the back of her pants and say "Poo". She does that for every diaper, wet or messy, but at least she knows what she's talking about. I asked her Dr. if I should start letting her use the potty, and she said she can have at it if she's interested. Today, Brynn sat on the big girl potty 3 times. She didn't ever actually GO while on the potty, but she sat there for a little while each time and then she would get a piece of toilet paper and try to wipe. It is quite possibly the cutest thing cause she's so tiny. We'll see how it goes...but Ethan is none too thrilled that his little sister is using the big potty like him, he told me this morning "the potty is for big kids like me, not babies like Brynnie." On the contrary my friend - it's for anyone willing to use it. How would that be to have a baby out of diapers before they're 2? She's 18 months, so she's got plenty of time to show me.

We were shopping today, in search of a birthday gift for Ethan's friend. I decided to run into TJ Maxx since we were in the area, and we perused the toys while we were there. Ethan set his sites on a remote control Batman car - not for his friend, but for himself. Typically, I can tell him to go put things back with just a little complaint and sadness, but today it was SOOOO much more than that. Complete sobs. He did put the toy back as he was asked, but sobbed and sobbed and sobbed. I kept trying to tell him that he could ask for something like that for his birthday in April, and then he looked at me through his tears and said "Do you think they'll still have that car when it's my birthday?". Clearly not - it's TJ Maxx, so I told him that we could find something similar to it. That answer would simply not do - and amidst it all, Scot called. We discussed why Ethan was crying so hard (which is probably what every shopper was wondering at this point), so I put Scot on the phone with Ethan. After some words were exchanged, a deal had been struck. Ethan would earn the toy in exchange for a couple weeks of hard work at home. Ethan crying stops. Cue Brynn crying. It was a disaster, but we made it out alive...but just barely. As we passed people, Ethan would stop them to make them guess what he had in his bag. The clues went something like this "Guess what I got? It has a remote and goes really really fast." Random guesser would give answer, and then Ethan would say with overwhelming enthusiasm "A BATMAN REMOTE CONTROL CAR!!!" The kid is darling...albeit a bit spoiled by his dad, but darling none the less.

The high drama is the big reason I hate taking all the kids shopping. They are all auditioning for Macbeth every time we go to Target. I've tried bribery. It doesn't work.

I had a similar experience with a snow white doll at TJ Maxx. I thought Ava was over it by the time we got home, but she walked straight over to her dad. Threw herself face down on the floor and cried these huge sobs. So dramatic! If dad had been there, or on the phone, I'm sure Ava could have struck a similar deal. Why do I always feel like the bad guy?
